Aquila Jane MacKinnon is like any other 12 year old in 1850, where she lives is not so common. She lives on an island, in a lighthouse! Quila, which is what her parents call her, enjoyed helping her Mama around the lighthouse and helping Papa tend to the light. Mama actually dies before this story takes place, but there are many references to their life together. Papa and Quila are saddened by Mama's death and are learning to live their lives without her.
